The conference (Trans-)Formation of Identities: Orthodox Christians in the Ottoman Balkans (c.1450-c.1750) was held on October 16 and 17, 2024, in Hall 3 of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA) as part of the project of the same name financed by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia. The goal of the conference was to shed light on various ways Orthodox Christians identified themselves in this under-researched period. The main context for these identifications was the administrative and social organization of the Ottoman Empire, but within this broad framework, different communities with distinct characteristics were imagined. For example, religious services and population surveys created different groups and described them differently. To highlight these layered processes and possible approaches to the topic, presentations were given not only by the project participants but also by domestic and foreign researchers from various profiles and areas of interest, placing this important issue in the general Balkan context.
